First Unitarian Church of Cleveland is proud to present a performance by the Distinguished Gentlemen of Spoken Word on Sunday, June 10th at 4:00 pm.
The Distinguished Gentlemen of Spoken Word are a group of African-American young men, ages 8-18, who study the art of performance poetry. The group seeks to impact and inspire with their powerful stories, reciting works from Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Shakespeare, Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and others, as well as their own original poetry. Their performances incorporate elements of classic poetry, movement (mime/breaking/flexing) and the art of spoken word. The Distinguished Gentlemen have performed throughout the state of Ohio at churches, schools, and community events; and at half-time shows for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The group studies and performs under the guidance of Honey Bell-Bey, a poet, teacher, youth advocate, and community activist. Honey’s goal with the Distinguished Gentlemen is to show that African-American boys and men are neither delinquent nor violent, but that they are indeed brilliant, talented, fabulous, and distinguished. The group believes that poetry is a living tool they can use to stay focused and on the right path at school, at home, and within the community. In addition to performances, the Distinguished Gentlemen participate in weekly character development classes, helping them to become leaders.
Admission to the performance is free. However, a goodwill offering will be collected. First Unitarian Church of Cleveland is located at 21600 Shaker Boulevard in Shaker Heights.
